Is your message reaching its target audience?
Is your web site generating ongoing revenue?
Is your web site attracting new customers?
With millions of competing sites the answer is probably "NO" or "I DON'T KNOW" - unless you have optimized your site for the search engines.
Insight into the number of visitors to your site, where they came from, which search engines, and what they typed into the search engines is the first step in understanding your websites current situation. (A basic hosting account with Gemini Productions includes free monthly traffic reports from the award winning "ClickTracks Web Analytics" Clicktracks" traffic analyzing software.)
When we first discuss traffic analysis with clients, many ask if we can tell 'exactly who' the visitors are. The answer is no. Some even believe that finding out the visitors IP address is important as it can be traced to a corporation or location. From a marketing perspective this is useless information as an IP address from Company XYZ could include hundreds of employees at a particular company.
In addition the location of an IP is frequently incorrect. ie. All visitors using AOL would show as coming from the United States when they could be in Canada.
The most important information in your website traffic reports is related to what sources brought people to your site.
This includes which search engines and most importantly what they typed into those search engines.
A quick look at this information will tell you if your website has any relevant ranking in the major search engines.
Example: Company XYZ has a website that sells office furniture across North America. When we look at their traffic reports we see that the only 'search terms' that are bringing visitors to their site are related to their company name. This indicates that the people finding them online already know about their company but dont know their web address.
Depending on the type of business your have, there are dozens or hundreds of 'related keywords' that people are searching for that do not include your company name. These are the keywords that you want your website to appear for in the major search engines.
In the industry we call these 'targeted keywords' and generating traffic from them results in increased traffic and new customer acquisitions.
Even if you see that your site is generating traffic from related keywords, do you know where that 'keyword' ranks on the major engines? If it ranks below the first few pages, most visitors searching that phrase will not find you.
This is just a sample of the information available in your reports. Advanced analysis and additional information is also available.
What is search engine optimization?
S.E.O. is the process of implementing key programming which adheres to the algorithmic function of the search engine spiders. This programming allows the search engine to understand and process the contents of your web site more rapidly. When search engine spiders understand the contents of the site, it, in turn positions the site higher on its index.
The process of S.E.O. encompasses the programming of META tags, site restructuring and / or the creation of search friendly content. Search engines prefer properly formatted submissions, site owners know the value of being in the top ten of a search, and search engine users appreciate the ease in which they can locate the information they are searching for.
Phase one
Research to identify how many searches are being made for your product and service.
For example: Let's say you own a computer store in Oakville, ON. Naturally you would like to attract people to your site that are searching for computers in Oakville. Our first step is to research phrases that describe your offering, such as:
computer store in oakville,
Computer store in Oakville,
computer oakville,
etc, etc.
Each search is specific and will produce different results. We research approximately 100 - 300 different keywords/phrases to determine which phrases are best for your site.
Phase two - Targeted content
Based on the information above we target the phrases you want promoted by creating specific content for your web site. This information is then incorporated into your web site.
Phase three - Submission
We submit your web site to the major search engines including Google, Yahoo, MSN and over 100 other engines and directories.
Phase four - Allow search engines to index site
Approximately six to twelve weeks is required for the search engines to accept and index your new content. After this time you should start to see results from the promotion. (There are a number of factors that determine the how long it takes before you see results. Sites newer to the internet generally take longer.)
Phase five - Reporting
We provide you with detailed quarterly reports of where you stand on each search engine. Note: If we host your site we also provide weekly, monthly and year to date traffic reports that show results of the promotion in addition to many more details of the visits to your web site.
